A Post About Random Acts of Kindness and Helping Others by Chanhassen Personal Trainer Justin Yule

Girl giving present Chanhassen Boot Camp Share the Love! It’s Be an Angel Day : )

When was the last time you took time out of your schedule and your life to intentionally do something kind for another person?  Many of us get so busy trying to keep up with our many commitments and activities that we forget to reach out and help others.

But being kind to others is not only good for them (because they are the beneficiaries of your generosity), but it is also good for you!

Kindness-science

A research professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (Carolyn Schwartz) found that those who simply lend a supportive ear to others who are suffering experience dramatic improvements in the quality of their life.   In another study, she found that people who help others were happier and less depressed than those who do not regularly help others.1

What is going on?

According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, there may be a biochemical reaction happening in the brain.  When the research team used an MRI to scan the brains of people as they were deciding to do good deeds for others, they noticed that the mesolimbic systems were activated.  This is the same area of the brain that becomes activae when someone receives a monetary reward or experiences other positive things.

Researchers also found that another area of the brain was activated—the subgenual area.  This area produces chemicals that help us to feel good, such as oxytocin.  The facts are in.  If you want to feel good, help someone!

Be an angel

Today is the perfect day to put this into action:  today is Be an Angel Day.

In 1993, Jayne Howard Feldman created this holiday as a way of encouraging people to do good deeds in God’s name.  The good deeds can be of any type—physical, mental or spiritual.  The point is that you help someone else.

If you need some ideas or just want a daily dose of feeling good checkout Random Acts of Kindness on Facebook by clicking HERE.

Be creative and see how many different acts of kindness you can think of.  Leave a note in the comment section and tell us how you helped someone today!
